Jersey

It’s nine years since we were on Jersey and we are enjoying rediscovering its special gifts. Neil’s Mum, Anne, has worked wonders in her garden on the island coast, creating a haven for many birds. These include a noisy robin, an almost murmuration of starlings and a pair of heron gulls with their two enormous babies, whose diets Gerald and Anne generously supplement!

This young cormorant doesn’t live here. We discovered him standing on a step just down the road when we walked yesterday, and we hope he’s ok - there is bird flu in these parts at the moment.

The coast here is amazing.

One feature is the pink granite, bits of which really are startlingly pink!

We found a heart stone.

Another feature of this coast is the ebb and flow of the tide (which is enormous). Here is the view from our room this morning, the tide coming in. Note the Martello tower on the rocks in the middle distance - a defensive structure that is repeated at intervals the whole way round the Jersey coast.

And here’s the same view yesterday evening, with the tide out.

Twice each day, the outlook changes dramatically. At high tide, the Atlantic laps at the edge of the garden (see opening photo). Six hours later, the front yard stretches out for over a mile - a moonscape of rock, sand and sea weed. And then it floods back in again. It’s quite incredible.

In the next couple of days we hope to explore other parts of the island.

Buen Camino,
Neil and Sarah
