Savouring in Santiago

Today’s post has a decidedly culinary theme to it. We have been appreciating some rest in Santiago with time to mooch along the many little laneways and plazas and savour some of the local food and culture.

Last night we had dinner with our remaining pilgrim band in a little restaurant down the narrowest laneway in Santiago. So much so that we realised we must not eat too much or we’d struggle to get back out!!

And today we have mooched some more. Every now and then we turn a corner and glimpse the majestic Cathedral in the distance.

We had two food related hopes for today. One was to visit our favourite tapas bar and the other to visit a pulperia (a restaurant serving only octopus and in a classically Galician way - with patatas and sprinkled with pimentos or paprika). These next few photos are in the tapas bar.

It had a warm atmosphere and great energy.

The happy crew - Maylin (near Stuttgart), Klara (Prague) Luisa (Sevilla) and Sarah (Bruce!).

Mmmm yum!

And here’s the Pulperia - in a lane full of the favoured haunts of Santiago locals. It’s amazing how after about 8pm the streets come alive with people walking, talking, eating and singing. It seems to be a mixture of pilgrims, tourists and also locals, seemingly in great spirits.

In between meals this afternoon, we were drawn back to the Cathedral square - watching pilgrims arrive and marvelling again at the grandeur of the building, and beauty of the stone carving in the warm light.

So as you can see we have savoured this day - this amazing place, it’s streets and food. And we have savoured your comments. Thank you for your interest and support, we really appreciate it. And just to let you know that, for reasons best known to Google, Sarah has been locked out of her email account and can’t confirm her identity to get back in until she is reunited with her phone in Australia. So she can’t pick up emails to her usual gmail address at all - and apologises to anyone who has sent a message and not received a response.

We’re off to A Coruña tomorrow in preparation for the next walk, our blisters are healing and swollen ankles are returning slowly to normal.

Buen Camino
Neil and Sarah

  5. Your photos bring back memories of that lively city and the exhilaration of reaching the Cathedral- and good food! I’ve just reached Iona on a mini pilgrimage of my own. A beautiful wind-swept rocky island full of quiet and sacred places. Buen Camino for the next section of your pilgrimage Kate

  6. Sorry to hear about blisters and other nasties but amazing you have managed and enjoyed the walk Neil. For Brian and I the old cities, not in Spain, but mainly in Germany, were the highlight of our travels enjoying very much the history and architecture. Take care, Marion
