Resting in Bagneres de Bigorre

When we arrived yesterday evening in Bagneres de Bigorre, we discovered it was possible to stay in this pilgrim hostel for two days. After consultation with Andy, we found ourselves in furious agreement about accepting this opportunity. We went to bed knowing we could sleep in and look forward to a rest day. And what a lovely day it has been!

It began with a leisurely breakfast of pasries and coffee, after which we took a bag full of clothes to the laundromat - ah, the bliss of fully clean gear! There were some undramatic but quietly lovely streetscapes.

Since Roman times, this has been a spa town and the thermal baths are still in use.

The clock tower was part of the Dominican Priory, and dates from the 16th century.

The town is also a base for exploring the Tourmalet and the Pic du Midi, famous peaks in the Tour de France, their names long familiar to us from late night Tour watching on SBS. It was amazing to be so close, with shops selling cycling and hiking gear and memorabilia.

The path along the river gave great views of the mountains.

Pic du Midi.

The church in the centre of town had a very striking fresco or tapestry.

Lunch!!! It was galettes and Breton cider - slightly out of region, but what can you do??

Well rested and grateful for a gentle restorative day, we set out tomorrow for Lourdes. We are once more heading for the hills, but have a less arduous route planned and plenty of supplies on board! It is pouring with rain as I write ☔️☔️, but really, what could possibly go wrong??

  1. Now that’s more like it! And a dip at Lourdes will resolve any remaining aches and pains.

  3. It's lovely to see your smiles Sarah. You're on your way again as I write. Here over night there was wild weather around the Illawarra. Now it's cold again, too. I truly love being with you both. I especially like the low clouds and their hovering in some of the valleys. Your photos are so wonderful, thank you.
