Réunion

I was up at 3am to pack and get to Santiago airport for my flight to Paris (Beauvais). A shuttle transit into Paris itself and a slightly stressful hour of navigation through the underground Metro maze followed. Success! I emerged at Gare Montparnasse and moments later - a sight for sore eyes!! There was Sarah  alive and well, waiting eagerly (my interpretation!!) at the top of the escalator. How wonderful to be together again.

We wandered down the road a little and found a little providore shop outside of which we shared a delicious baguette and cider - a reunion feast indeed.

A very fast train trip to Saint-Malo ensued, followed by a very damp walk to our little hotel in the walled town. What a place!

We’re definitely in an Atlantic world now.

We enjoyed galettes and goat’s cheese salad at a delightful little kiosk/ restaurant. Galettes featured for our dinner last night as well!!

A stroll on the beach at low tide.

The cathedral of St Vincent. Like everything in Saint-Malo it has been rebuilt after having been bombed to ruins in the siege of the city in 1944. Inside it is theologically thoughtfully appointed, including with some striking modern frescos.

The Chapel of Peace with its triptych of the apocalypse.

We left the walled city and headed for the ferry in the late afternoon.

And here is our view this morning - the tide half out from Mum’s stunningly floriferous back garden. It’s a lovely and restful way to be ending our travels to have these last days with family.

We’re looking forward to a lunch or two at Jersey pubs, as well as some home cooked meals! We’ll post at least once more in the next few days. In fact, tomorrow there’ll be a special post on Mum and Gerald’s amazing garden… stay tuned!!

Buen Camino,
Neil and Sarah 💙🏖️

  2. Yay! Glad you made it. Despite all the beautiful photographs, I hadn’t realised how many of Sarah’s smiling face had been part of my vicarious experience of this and previous walk of yours until she returned 😏. And thank you Neil, I do look forward to more pics of the garden by the sea. After that, if you go ‘offline’ eating and drinking your way around the island, I for one cannot complain. It’s been a very full trip, especially ending with those paintings and stained glass in cathedral. Which might be a taking off point for a Reflection? KAS

  3. How wonderful to see you both in the photos and to reconnect with our trip to San Malo some years ago.

  4. Thank you very much Sarah and Neil. I have followed your journey, just wonderful! I still have some more to take in of your time away, so am looking forward to some special time to enjoy and absorb your stories and photos :) :)

I went to Turkey/ Gallipoli for 15 days in early May, with 4 of our grandchildren to accompany me . A very memorable experience being in such a beautiful country, and sitting before the graves of my Mum's first cousins who died at Gallipoli. One enlisted from New Zealand, a farmer 23, and was killed in the first Kiwi boat that landed on April 25, the other was also a farmer, aged 22, was from Victoria, and was in the Light Horse, killed on July 3. We had the gift of an excellent guide, both on Gallipoli and in Ephesus and other marvellous ancient sites we visited and I felt a very deep spiritual connection with many places. For me, parts of Turkey are ' thin places' as on the Island of Iona...
I feel very blessed, both by vicariously being with you on your Retreat, Sarah, and also Neil, and your journey and the exquisite joy of St Malo and the absolute beauty and history of Jersey. Thank you both so much. Welcome back to the beautiful
