Lisboa

We have arrived! After being in aeroplane cabins and airport transit lounges for what seemed like days, we finally emerged from our last liminal space - the underground metro, into the heart of Lisbon. This is the scene that greeted us outside Rossio station.

For Sarah, it immediately evoked memories of being here 25 years ago with Sally and her dad, Eric.

The bright sunlight, the faded facades, the smooth white cobbled footpaths and the grand statues...

How good is this!!

It was very hot, 36 degrees, and we got a bit waylaid wondering through the Alfama (old town) looking for our accommodation. We walked up into the castle Sao Jorge precinct, eventually forced to stop for a beer and seek direction. From our seats in the outdoor cafe we were greeted by a familiar scene...

We eventually found our room. It has a tram running down the narrow lane, it passes within two feet of our window.

Here's a few more images from near where we are.

The famous Portuguese tiles, or azulejos, are very much in evidence adorning the facades of old buildings and decorating walls.

We managed to stay awake until it was dark, but we're very grateful for a room and bed to rest in. We'll have more of this beautiful city to share tomorrow. We plan to meet Kerry Jacobs from Benedictus on the cathedral steps tomorrow morning. How amazing is that!!

Blessings, Neil and Sarah

Great to hear that you have arrived and what a beautiful old city,
Hope the tram isn't a major form of sleep deprivation!
    Love the blue Sarah.
    Aren't the tiles superb!
Thanks for letting us in your training in Canberra and the lovely day down on the Murrumbidgee track before you left.
It's going to be quite an experience and we look forward to vicariously travelling with you.
    Much love

  2. The tiles are pretty fantastic. I'm guessing you don't want to get one because you don't want to have to carry it all the way to Santiago!

I've never been to Lisbon but your photos give a sense of what it's like. Any city with trams (or streetcars) is okay with me--even though they are pretty noisy.

    Bom Caminho!

  3. Gosh how different it all is from young Canberra! What an amazing but instructive (when you can work out how!) disorientation modern travel is. Great to see you there on all our behalves...
    Love,

  5. Wonderful that you have arrived safely! We thought of you both as we walked yesterday and discussed your arrival over dinner. Lisbo is such a beautiful city! We know you will enjoy your time there. The tram rides are a hoot! So many places to visit and time to get a little use to the heat before you begin Thursday. So nice to be just up the coast in the same time zone for once! Now Wednesday is a Wednesday when we chat! Bom Caminho!
