18. Torrijos

We will start today’s blog with last night’s dinner - paella in a local Toledo establishment. Ken, this photo is for you. It was a nice way to conclude a relaxing day.

We had a later start to the stage too because we wanted to stick around for breakfast at our pension, which started at 8.30. It was such a good breakfast that we felt it was worth waiting for, even though it would mean walking the long stage in the warmer part of the day.

The walk out of Toledo was relatively uneventful despite a lack of way marking. Eventually, we do pick up the arrows and felt more certain to pick up the pace. We followed the Rio Tajo for a time and then climbed our first range and out on to more open country.

From that vantage point we could look back over the skyline of Toledo.

Sarah was quick to resume her stride from previous pilgrimages and handled the long stage admirably.

Mostly, the route took us through farm land so not so many spectacular photo opportunities - but some lovely fields of poppies, ripening wheat and oats, and a massive tomato nursery.

We crossed the Rio Guadarrama.

And after a late lunch, it was a pretty long hot slog to Torrijos. But we’re safely ensconced in the municipal albergue, rehydrated and ready for a good sleep. We ordered a couple of ‘light’ salads for dinner, so to conclude today’s food odyssey, here’s the photo shoot!

It’s been great to share the road again with each other.

  1. Nice to see those two familiar faces together on Camino again😎 Good to hear your first stage went well Sarah:) We arrived home late last night, and now it's the middle of the night and I'm wide awake! Gotta love jet lag! Have a great day tomorrow in the nice Spanish sunshine.

  2. Delicious-looking paella. And those are the "light" salads? They're huge!

You wouldn't believe how much I'm enjoying following your journey. Thanks for posting even after long days of hot walking--and on pavement, at least some of the time, as well.

    ¡Buen Camino!
